Having been down to Lake Hood and overnighted there a couple of times before Tina and I decided to leave Amberley early and have a little sailing practise on Windfall F6 on Friday afternoon. The nationals were held in conjunction with the NZ Trailer Yacht Champs on 6th & 7th February, being hosted by the Otago Trailer Yacht Squadron, and based from Port Chalmers Yacht Club. The Championships were held on Lyttelton Harbour, in conjunction with the 2008 New Zealand Trailer Yacht Championship. After two great Farr 6000 National Championships in Port Chalmers and Littleton last year we were looking forward to making the trip north. Each year the Timaru Yacht Club hosts the Aviemore Classic, on Lake Aviemore, part of the Waitaki river hydro-electric power system. One of the great things about the Aviemore Classic is that it attracts 60 to 80 trailer yachts from most parts of the South Island, with the occasional North Island yacht thrown in. Gale winds and huge swells may have caused the postponement of the scheduled Farr Fun Day however the following Sunday saw a mixed fleet of 12 Farrs out on the harbour in conditions that were quite the opposite. A combination of fantastic competition, challenging conditions, convivial company and excellent organization by the Canterbury Farr Owners Group/CTYS organizing committee made this year’s event possibly the best one yet. The Farr Fun Race was held in murky conditions on Lyttelton Harbour. Something Nautical was the theme for the day, with most of the 7 Farrs & crews dressing up for the occasion. Unexpectedly light conditions and sea fog were the order of the day at the Farr 6000 NZ Champs held at Port Chalmers, Otago this year. This year started like most Labour weekends down at the Otematata boat harbour with the gathering of yachties from around the South Island. For most this is the first time they have used their boat since winter. The 2003 / 2004 Doyle Sailmakers Nelson Farr 6000 New Zealand Championships were held in Napier over the weekend 17th to 19th January 2004. Great sailing conditions and an excellent turnout of fifteen boats made this an event to remember. Again the Masters Games was well supported by eligible members of the OTYS, with both crews and boats making up a large proportion of the trailer yacht fleets. The Navman NZ Trailer Yacht Championships held at Lake Ngaroto near Te Awamutu showed how competitive our Farr sailors can be with great sailing by Ken Bradshaw and Graeme Burton to win their respective divisions. On Sat 6th March the Lyttelton Farr fleet took to the water for the annual Farr Fun race in perfect conditions. The 2002 NZ Champs will be remembered for several things, the number of competitors, the consistency of the top performers and most definitely the weather. Yes that is fresh snow on the hills in the photos. Christchurch hosted the 7th World Firefighters Games over the week from 26th October to the 2nd of November. Over that period there were 72 different events This year the Farrs had again an excellent turnout with four Farr 7500s, one Farr 740 sport and twelve Farr 6000s. Once more, Labour weekend at Lake Aviemore showed why this regatta has earned the reputation of being the premier trailer yacht event in the South Island. |
