I am wondering about the term we are using here "dropping the whole keel plate". When I posted yesterday that we "dropped the centreplate" I meant we let it down to the vertical with the winch as normal. Then, because we were able, we pushed the plate forard to expose the cord hole. We did not have to remove the keel or even touch the lynch bolt.

Our Farr 5 trailer, presumably the original and 30 years old, had rust on the front and rear shallow V's on the spine. It passed a warrant OK but we took it in for the rust to be sandblasted off those joints and painted. Were in for a shock. They almost fell apart under the engineers hammer. He cut them out and welded in new box sections. This time holes were drilled to release any water from that area. Cost $196 + GST.

We had our Farr 5 on a hoist at a local garage for a morning while the trailer was being repaired. We dropped the centreplate and then took it forward of the vertical to expose the hole taking the knot at the end of the lockdown rope. The garage owner charged us $50 for arranging the trailer repair and use of the hoist - as well as doing some problem solving with us. We could not have replaced the rope without dropping the plate.
I found the section on depowering really useful and look forward to perfecting my techniques. The aspect of sailing that makes novices most uncomfortable is the angle of heel, particularly as the wind gets up. Avoiding frightening the crew (my long suffering partner!) is a priority on my boat!

One thought when replacing the keel wire: Ensure the shackle attaching the keel wire to the plate has no protruding lugs, ie dont use the sort that can be opened with a shackle key.

Better to use one that uses a slotted screw so that it ends up flush with the sides of the shackle on both sides. The reason is that if you hit something and the keel retracts in a hurry anything protruding may grind a hole or groove in the inside of the keel case. This can even happen in normal use. (reported by two owners over the years)
